Colts looking for ways to get most out of Rivers, Brissett

Image
Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich understands Jacoby Brissett's predicament.Twice, Brissett emerged as Indy's starting quarterback. Twice, he's lost it to an older player with a more accomplished resume — neither of whom owns a Super Bowl ring as he does. Now the longtime backup to Hall of Famer Jim Kelly will try to help Brissett cope with the frustration and disappointment of making yet another major transition — this time backing up eight-time Pro Bowler Philip Rivers.“When the time was right I called Jacoby and told him, ‘Hey, this looks like it may happen,’” Reich said Tuesday, describing his initial conversation with Brissett. “We talked it through. Obviously, Jacoby wasn’t happy about it. He wasn’t happy about it, but he’s a great teammate, he’s a great leader. We all know that and I’m sure he’ll be good.”All along, Reich and Colts general manager Chris Ballard have insisted they believe Brissett possesses the skills to be a full-time NFL starter, provides a lock...

Leafs' Dubas praises NBA's 'momentous move' to suspend its season amid pandemic

Image
TORONTO — Kyle Dubas was watching television the evening of March 11 when news started to trickle out of Oklahoma City.An NBA player — it would turn out to be Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz — had tested positive for COVID-19.Shortly thereafter, the league suspended its season. The NHL, and most of the rest of the sports world, would soon follow suit."Unlike anything that I've ever experienced professionally," Dubas, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, recalled of a stunning night that soon flipped to the unknown of the following morning.Hockey games were still scheduled, but everyone knew it was inevitable the NHL would also be forced to pause operations, which it did later in the day after cancelling all activities. Looking back nearly three weeks later, Dubas, whose team was supposed to host the Nashville Predators in the midst of a heated playoff race, credits the NBA for sounding that alarm to the urgency of the novel coronavirus outbreak. In short, it finally m...

NHL extends self-quarantine guideline until April 15

Image
The NHL has extended its guideline for players and staff to self-quarantine until April 15 and it is possible the coronavirus pandemic could push that back even further.Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the extension to the Associated Press in an email Tuesday. It adds an extra 11 days to the previous guidance of April 4, which Daly last week acknowledged was “a meaningless date” because of the rapidly changing situation.“As we get closer to the date, we're going to have to make decisions as to what to do then,” Daly said. "We're biting this off in chunks.”The NHL put its season on pause March 12 with 189 regular-season games remaining. Commissioner Gary Bettman said then he was optimistic of resuming the season and awarding the Stanley Cup.The timeline for doing that still isn't clear. The NHL has asked teams for arena availability dates through August, so it wouldn't be inconceivable to see hockey last deep into the summer."Depending on how the count...
